Actor · Producer · Scottish Icon
Born 13 November 1969 · Paisley, Scotland
Born and raised in Paisley, Scotland, Gerard James Butler is one of Hollywood's most reliably compelling leading men — a performer who brings genuine physicality and emotional depth to every role he takes on. Raised by his mother after his parents divorced, Butler attended St. Mirin's & St. Margaret's High School and went on to study law at the University of Glasgow, where he was elected president of the law society.
His path to acting was anything but smooth. After graduating, Butler secured a position as a trainee lawyer in Edinburgh — only to be fired one week before qualifying. He later recalled the dismissal as a liberation. The same year, after seeing a production of Trainspotting at the Edinburgh Festival, he moved to London the very next day to begin auditioning.
His big screen debut came in Mrs. Brown (1997) alongside Dame Judi Dench. Small parts followed in Tomorrow Never Dies and Tomb Raider before his breakthrough as the title character in The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Then came 300 in 2006 — and the world sat up. Playing King Leonidas of Sparta, Butler delivered one of the decade's most iconic performances, earning worldwide recognition and cementing his status as a genuine cinematic force.
